Reverso!

What would life be like if you lived it in reverse?

What would life be like if everything was opposite?

Think of all the things that might be different or changed if some part of your world was backwards or in reverse?

Watch this short film and take note of the things that are different for this man's life.

Just notice small things.

What happened in the end?

Writing and Thinking
Write a list of your reverse observations
Make a comic strip showing part of a day in the life...
Make a list of curious ideas, things that would be hard or easier
Invent your own reverse world idea
List all the jobs that you would be good at if this was you
List the disadvantages you noticed

Explain it...

Imagine that you meet a friendly alien at your local park.  Some how this small alien has been left on Earth by mistake after his family dropped by for a visit to our planet.
You decide to smuggle this creature into your bedroom and look after him.

The alien is very intelligent and quickly learns your language, but does not understand many of the things that we do on Earth.

In a group talk about how you would explain some of the things we do on Earth.

Write a short explanation with your team and present what you have done back to the class.

Use the explanation rubric to help you make a really good explanation.

Instructions

This week's key writing task is to create a set of instructions that someone could use to make something or to do something like an experiment.

The main criteria for a clear set of instructions include:

Title
A list of ingredients or materials required
Diagrams - pictures of different stages to show how or what to do
A clear sequence and order with numbers to help people to follow the steps
A short easy to follow description of what to do at each step

Here are some examples:

Here are the instructions for the
balloon experiment we did last week.

Step 1
Decide on what you would like to explain how to do
Cooking - How to Make...
Science Experiment
Job Around the House
How to do the..
How to clean a...
How to Fix...
How to Make a...

Step 2
Make a sketch plan of your idea including all the key steps for how to...
Draw some quick draft diagrams
List ingredients and materials
Identify the main steps

Step 3
Write the instructions for each step identified in your plan

Remember Keywords:
Just like writing a recount words like next, then, after that, eventually, when, finally all help to sequence your ideas.

Welcome Back to Term 4

  Newspaper Reports

Your key writing task this week is to write a report for a group newspaper.

Each person in your group will need to contribute one news report for your newspaper.

Your report can be about something that happened in the holidays or you can report on another event including a world or national news event.

If you work efficiently on your report you might have time to add extra items to your paper:

  • Weather
  • Cartoons
  • Crossword
  • Adverts
  • Recipe
  • Sport News
  • Fashion News

Step 1.
Brianstorm 10 ideas of things you could write a report about.

Step 2.
Select one of your ideas

Step 3.
Plan in detail - who, what, where, when, why, how
use the planning framework on the back of your contract.

Coat of Arms

A coat of arms is a unique heraldic design on a shield, escutcheon, surcoat, or tabard. A coat of arms is used to cover, protect, and identify the wearer. Thus the term is often stated as "coat-armour", because it was anciently displayed on the front of a coat of cloth in European societies.

A Coat of Arms or Family Crest has long been a symbol of a family's identity and values. Originally used to identify warriors dressed in armor, each knight chose symbols and colours to represent his family or clan. These family crests or coats of arms have been passed down throughout generations.
However, most of us are not directly connected with these ancestors, or the symbols of yesteryear are not representative of who our family is today.
You can make your own personal family crest based on the values and activities that are important to you and your family.
Step 1. Investigate these web sites and gather information and ideas about possible designs.

Create a Coat of Arms

Step 2.  In your journal start planning your ideas by taking note of the design ideas you like.
Shield Shape x3 ideas
Divisions x3 different ideas
Colours that have some meaning for you
Icons and images that represent you and your family - you could include elements of a flag, a sport, an animal to represent a value eg. lion for bravery.  You could include everyday objects to show what you do eg. a pen, a knife and fork, a computer, a lego brick
A Motto - a short saying or three or four important values words

Do a sketch of your coat of arms in your journal using different combinations of ideas from your notes.

Near Death Experience

Planning
Thoughts Words Ideas
Digging the ground of your memory and imagination to to find the ideas lurking below the surface.

Why does this scare you? What happened to make this scary do you know?
That could be me

What thoughts are going on in your head?
That could be me
Is this real
Is this really happening?
unbelievable
he's dead
he's going to die
Describe what you see
startled faces
tight rope
a huge drop
massive cliffs
I see astonishment and fear

Describe what you hear and smell
a whizzing sound
crash bang
a word
a swearing word
a loud petrified swearing word
shrill piercing
boom
echo
bird song
smell of native bush
sun on my face a still peaceful day
explosion
blood curdling
What is your body doing?
Frozen
statue like
shiver down my spine
adrenalin pumping
heard pounding
run run get help
What do you want to do?
wake up from the horror of this

hold on to something

What words best describe this situation?
time running in slow motion
horror
abyss
abseil
rescue

Is everyone afraid of this thing?
it was all in the moment
I never knew that fear until it happened
the shout
the scream

Draft
141 words 10 minutes writing – 30 minutes planning – 30 minutes thinking
Created this...

A Moment in Time!

It was unexpected, sudden, and terrifying.
And it started with a word.
Just a word.
A swearing word (that I can’t write down here).
And then the word got louder.
The rope was tight and heavy.
A whizzing sound filled the chasm like a giant zipper being undone.
With the echo of those bad words bouncing off the walls.
And then it hit me
The dread
The feeling
This isn’t happening
This is a dream
Time slowed, almost froze
I was frozen
Petrified
That could be me – I thought
And the noise of the acceleration
The sound of speed building and growing from deep below us
Fear frozen on all our faces
A boom like hammers smashed against the walls of the abyss and our ears
Horror in the realisation
Then a blood curdling – silence
That told us
He was dead

What Frightens You?

This weeks writing task is based on something that frightens you.

We have already brain-stormed some ideas about this.

The next step is to choose one of those ideas and make a plan around that idea.

These key ideas (basic organising ideas) might help you.

MY TOPIC IS ....
Look deeply into your memory and re-imagine

Why does this scare you? What happened to make this scary do you know?

What thoughts are going on in your head?
Describe what you see

Describe what you hear and smell
What is your body doing?

What do you want to do?
What words best describe this situation?
Is everyone afraid of this thing?

How do you put this writing all together?
You are a narrator of a story - you are giving a report to a police man - telling facts about what you see, hear, smell and feel.  Your writing needs to be slightly chatty with a worried concerned feeling that someone is listening as you talk in private with a friend.
