Films to Think About

These three films each contain a message for our life and learning.

If you could only use one word to sum up what each film was about what words would you choose?

Create - Imagine

Retell the story - What happened - What was this film about?
Did this story remind you of another story you know?
Think - Question
Retell the story - What happened - What was this film about?
Did this story remind you of another story you know?

Dream - Inspire

Retell the story - What happened - What was this film about?
Did this story remind you of another story you know?

Reverso!

What would life be like if you lived it in reverse?

What would life be like if everything was opposite?

Think of all the things that might be different or changed if some part of your world was backwards or in reverse?

Watch this short film and take note of the things that are different for this man's life.

Just notice small things.

What happened in the end?

Writing and Thinking
Write a list of your reverse observations
Make a comic strip showing part of a day in the life...
Make a list of curious ideas, things that would be hard or easier
Invent your own reverse world idea
List all the jobs that you would be good at if this was you
List the disadvantages you noticed

Predict it..

Watch the first few second of this short film then try and predict what you think might happen next.

What is a PIXEL?

Watch the next few seconds to see if your were correct in your prediction.

Can you finish the story?

This is Not My Hat

Who is telling the story?
Who is the story teller talking to?
Why did he steal the hat?
What happened at the end?
What's the moral of the story?

Where would you hide if you needed to get away from someone?

Write your own short story about something you might borrow or loan or take just a bit of.
Write as if you are having a conversation inside your head about what you've done.
Justify - give reasons for your actions
Explain your plan about how you could avoid detection - being found out.

Do you feel guilty?
should you feel guilty?

Explain it...

Watch these two explanation videos to help you to understand how to explain something.

We will work in a group again to:

  1. talk about a new topic
  2. plan ideas
  3. write a draft
  4. present your work to the class

Where does the Sun go at night?

Why do I have to brush my teeth?

Explain it...

Imagine that you meet a friendly alien at your local park.  Some how this small alien has been left on Earth by mistake after his family dropped by for a visit to our planet.
You decide to smuggle this creature into your bedroom and look after him.

The alien is very intelligent and quickly learns your language, but does not understand many of the things that we do on Earth.

In a group talk about how you would explain some of the things we do on Earth.

Write a short explanation with your team and present what you have done back to the class.

Use the explanation rubric to help you make a really good explanation.

Writing an Explanation

What is it?
How does it work?
Why does that happen?

Being able to explain something is a very valuable skill.  The slide show below gives some tips about how to write an explanation and the sorts of words you need to include.

Key Steps in Your Writing

Use an introductory sentence to say what the thing is

Give exaples of how this thing works
Or what it does

Elaborate with examples that tell about what happens in some detail use cause and effect

End with a conclusion that finishes off your idea or gives a summary or the big picture
