At a height of 8,848 metres above sea level, Mt Everest is the tallest mountain in the world.  It was first climbed by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary on May 29, 1953.  In the last sixty years just over 1500 have climbed the mountain.  Many have died trying.
